It's been raining all day which just makes me so loathe to leave the house for anything. I didn't even own an umbrella until I moved here, but it's definitely gotten a lot of use recently. However, last weekend was absolutely lovely - not only the weather, but the incredible Mostra de Doçaria, a festival of baked goods in Coimbra.
Many of the pastries (pasteis) or cakes (bolas) of Portugal have their roots centuries ago in convents. After religious orders were abolished in Portugal in the 19th century, many nuns became bakers. The recipes they've created over the years are very popular and incredibly delicious. Many contain sweetened egg yolks, chopped nut pastes and cream - the pointy ones above sitting on the terracotta discs even have chicken in them!
Chocolate and Jordan almonds seem to be really popular around certain holidays.
It was like Halloween - everyone was walking around carrying bags and bags of noms.
Dried fruit in baskets. They looked like jewels and I really wanted to pick them up and hold them up to the light, but that would have been wrong.
And now the sun is out! Looks like another gorgeous day in Portugal.
