This past week was my birthday, the first of hopefully many in Portugal. After being a bit under the weather, it was a nice treat to forego work, eat extra large pasteis de nata, and lounge around the house in pajamas with my cats.
My husband took me out to Japonês, an amazing sushi restaurant in Coimbra, for the big day. We were the first ones to enter at around 8:00 (still kind of early for dinner), so I had a chance to photograph the gorgeous dining room we were eating in before any customers arrived. There were 3 rooms to pick from, each very minimal in decor, but we'd been told this one was the warmest (I knew my perpetually icy fingers would thank me later).
We started the meal with an appetizer: Rolinhos do Papel de Arroz. This was a rice paper roll with arugula, salmon, mango, sesame seeds and a spicy sauce.
For our entree, we split a sushi and sashimi platter which had some amazing combinations I've never tried before.
We got an extra maki to go along with it that had salmon, cherry and fresh herbs all rolled up and topped with sprouts.
And finally for dessert...I can't remember the name, but these were basically warm fried chocolate pudding balls topped with a chocolate syrup. We both agreed that we could have put away bowl after bowl of these. If I worked at Japonês, I would be hard-pressed not to sneak a few of these every night during my shift.
Another year has come and gone and what an exciting year it's been! Selling stuff, packing everything, dealing with shipping companies, the consulate, applying for visas, the endless paperwork, both for us and the cats, learning a different language and mastering semi-automatic transmission...so many new experiences. I can only hope this next year is equally exciting!
