Two weekends ago a friend reminded me that I hadn't been to a single performance at Quebra Bar's Jazz nights, something I knew I had to rectify before it reached its conclusion for the summer. The final jazz night was an evening with the music of Quebra Ensemble, which included one of the bar's owners on drums. The guys put on a wonderful show to a happy and peaceful crowd as the bartenders and servers worked their butts off to make sure everyone had what they needed. The music was really wonderful - quite a few old standards and several songs I wasn't familiar with - and the skill of the musicians was impressive.
I really enjoy events like this in Coimbra because even with big crowds at night, you almost never get pushed by some asshole or see any fights or find someone puking somewhere they shouldn't. I know it happens occasionally because people are people wherever you go, but I've been to a fair amount of events around the city and everyone's always so respectful and just out to have a good time. There's a lot of love here!
Unfortunately the QuebraJazz fest is over for 2017, but next summer will bring a new chance to listen to Portugal's great jazz musicians.
